Virginia's Appelt and Syracuse's Powell Win Tewaaraton Trophy

University of Virginia's, junior attack, Amy Appelt and Syracuse University's, senior attack, Michael Powell were named the recipients of the 2004 Tewaaraton Trophy. The trophy is given annually to the most outstanding male and female college lacrosse players in the nation. The ceremony was held June 3 rd at the National Geographic Headquarters in Washington , DC .

Amy Appelt (Garden City, NY; Garden City High School ), the 2004 ACC Player of the Year, has led the nation in goals since the beginning of the season. A USA Team Member, she started the season with 13 consecutive hat tricks and has scored in every game of her collegiate career, a span of 59 consecutive games. Appelt has been honored by the conference in each of her three years playing, and was the ACC and the National Rookie of the Year in her first-year campaign.

Appelt among five finalists invited to the event on June 3 rd. The others included Kelly Coppedge (University of Maryland, midfield, sr.)-also a finalist in 2003, Gail Decker (James Madison University, midfield, sr.), Michi Ellers (Georgetown University, defense, sr.), and Theresa Sherry (Princeton University,midfield, sr.).

Michael Powell (West Carthage, N.Y./Carthage Central H.S.) is one of the most accomplished players in the game, highly regarded because of his exceptional quickness, accurate shooting, unselfishness (great vision and passing) and tenacity on the ride. Powell was a 2004 Player of the Year Candidate and was a Tewaaraton Trophy finalist for the fourth-straight year. Powell leads the Orange in scoring for the fourth-straight season with 76 points (as of May 17th)....he leads the team in goals (42) and assists (34) and is second in groundballs with 50...he is tied for first in the nation in goals per game (3.00 gpg) and was second in points per game according to the May 10th NCAA Statistics. Powell became the all-time leading scorer in Syracuse Lacrosse history, breaking the record of 287 points held by his older brothers Casey and Ryan Powell. Powell becomes the first player to win the Tewaaraton Trophy twice and the only player to be named a finalist all 4 years.

The other men's finalists included Ryan Boyle (Princeton University, attack, sr.), Kyle Harrison (Johns Hopkins University, midfield, jr.)-also a finalist in 2003, Brodie Merrill (Georgetown University, defense, sr.), and Jed Prossner (University of North Carolina, Attack, sr).

The Tewaaraton Award Foundation, in conjunction with the University Club of Washington, D.C., formally established the Tewaaraton Trophy on August 29, 2000. Today, the Tewaaraton Trophy is recognized as the pre-eminent lacrosse award honoring the top female and male varsity collegiate lacrosse player in the United States. The Foundation honors lacrosse, the original and oldest American sport, through the Tewaaraton name and by promoting the game through the award.
