WASHINGTON DC, June 2 – The Tewaaraton Foundation has announced Jianna Lazore (Wolf Clan, Akwesasne Mohawk Nation) and Winter Rivera (Wolf Clan, Seneca Nation of Indians) as the recipients of the 2025 Tewaaraton Haudenosaunee Scholarships.
Lazore, who will play for William Smith College this fall, attended Salmon River High School
and the Northfield Mount Hermon School, also playing for the Haudenosaunee Nationals U-
20 team that competed in the 2024 Women's Lacrosse World Cup in Hong Kong. Rivera was a USA Lacrosse All-American and All-Academic at Gowanda Central High School and will play for Ohio State this year.

“On behalf of the Tewaaraton Foundation, I extend our heartfelt congratulations to the 2025 Tewaaraton Haudenosaunee Scholarship recipients,” said Andy Phillips, President of the Tewaaraton Foundation. “These outstanding student-athletes exemplify the spirit of the Tewaaraton Award through their leadership, academic excellence, and commitment to the game of lacrosse. We are proud to support their journeys and look forward to all they will accomplish in the future.”
Each year, the Tewaaraton Foundation awards the Tewaaraton Native American Scholarship to one male and one female student. The scholarship honors high school students of
Haudenosaunee heritage who achieve academic excellence, and exemplify high character and leadership. Both Lazore and Rivera were chosen through a competitive application process that included what the game of lacrosse means to them.
Said Lazore: “The game of lacrosse is not just an important part of my culture but also my
connection to my long lineage of ancestors; everyone who grew the game before me and
everyone blessed to play after me.”
Said Rivera: “I hope to educate others regarding this game and to use the opportunities given to me to be nothing but a positive role model for my people. I play the game for the right reasons and with the purest intentions.”

About The Tewaaraton Foundation
The Tewaaraton Award is recognized as the preeminent lacrosse award, annually honoring the top male and female college lacrosse player in the United States. Founded at the University Club of Washington, D.C., the award was first presented in 2001 with permission from the Mohawk Nation Council of Elders. “Tewaaraton” is the Mohawk word for lacrosse, and The Tewaaraton Award symbolizes lacrosse’s Native American Heritage. The Tewaaraton Foundation ensures the integrity of the selection process and advances the mission of the Foundation. Each year, The Tewaaraton Foundation presents two scholarships to students from the Haudenosaunee Confederacy – the Mohawk, Cayuga, Oneida, Onondaga, Seneca, and Tuscarora Nations.
